And he talks

Phillip has been saying some words for months now, but I feel it is really picking up and felt like I should document some of it. He said 'dada' and then, eventually, 'mama'.

The Dictionary (according to Phillip):

An or en = milk
Bur = bread
Nana = banana
Nana-an = smoothie
Nigh = blanket (perhaps derivative of putting a blanket on him and saying night-night)
Woof-woof or woo-woo= dog
Ca = cat, duck (quack)
So = snow or other precipitation
Zizz= fizzy water, seltzer
Zzz = zipper
Ahao OR hao = help
Ter = truck or tractor
Water = water, or it can also refer to the toilet
Tsh = toothbrush
Cakoe = cracker, chip, cookie, cheerios or other dry cereal, used to also refer to bread
My= more, occasionally may have its more traditional meaning
La-la = guitar, ukelele or other stringed musical instrument, may also refer to music in general. A more impressive instrument may be referred to as a coo-lala.
Hoo = owl
Trn or chn = train
Eye = egg
Geeze = glasses
Foom = phone
Cheese = cheese or Mac n cheese
Tot = hot

His first word was no. He has yet to adopt an affirmative.

I HATE SUNDAYS

I really do absolutely loathe sundays...the stress...the expectations. I really want to like them because they are one of the two full days of each week that I have the opportunity to spend with my family. Instead I have mornings like today when I end up just wanting to break things...I'm in the market for a new toothbrush. Whoever thought that 9am church was a good idea needs to have their head examined or, at minimum, spend some more time in a household with small children. Same goes for the person who thought up 3 hr long church meetings.

I'm done with Sundays, time to come up with a new name for the day and start over.

Now if I can just get my heart rate down and stop seething I'm going to go and try to forget this morning and just enjoy the time I have with my family.

Those status updates I never make...

I'm kind of weird about facebook - I love seeing the status updates about the crazy things that other people (or their children) are doing. I have told people before that half of the reason I'm still on fb is to see the updates that my older brother posts about his kids...they are hilarious.  As for me, I think about posting, but I usually just don't. I think that part of it is that I'm one of those people without a smartphone so I would actually have to drop what I was doing to go to the computer and post. I think the other part is the fear that nobody really actually wants to hear what I have to say and I'd just become one of those people whose posts you hide from your newsfeed. Since I'm not posting them there, I thought I might dump some here...

...Any day of the week...

Does anybody rent out dogs for families with young kids? I need one every day for an hour at dinner time.

The cats sometimes try to eat the dropped food, but they are way too picky. (Jan 21, 2014)

About 2 months ago...

Pip had his first tantrum today. He realized that his sippy cup was empty and threw it down on the floor in front of him.  Then he did it again.

No, we didn't actually photograph his first tantrum, but that was the offending sippy cup. (Christmas 2013)

Early January...

Those front two teeth that have been making our boy miserable for a month finally popped through! There goes the toothless grin.

Any time during the teething process...

Kids can get by with 4 teeth, right? We don't really need to continue with this teething process, do we?

8 months old...

Phillip has discovered the cat water bowl...uh oh

The kid loves water...in a mixing bowl over the summer (Jun 22, 2013 - 5 months)

Then...

Pip has figured out how to semi-gracefully crawl face first down the step from the kitchen to the shop...the things he'll do in pursuit of the cat bowls

Then...

Apparently Pip's teachers at daycare have been teaching him how to negotiate steps...awesome!!! he turned around to go down the step in pursuit of the cat bowls...not so awesome

...

Pip has been taking the going backwards down steps thing to the extreme...he now turns around in the middle of the kitchen and goes backwards for the last 5 feet before going down the step. I've also caught him turning around when he passes from one floor covering to another (carpet-->wood; wood-->tile)...you can never be to sure.

...

I caught Pip approaching the stairs in reverse today.  Thing is, he was getting ready to go up them.

...sometime in January...

Parental fail of the day...I taught my kid how to open the cat food canister. What was I thinking??

....

January 16...

He's walking!!!

December...

Learned over Christmas: Mardi Gras beads are some of the best toys ever.  Shiny, easy to grab and fun swing around. They make fun sounds when run over other materials and are also great for sorting. Best part - they are molded onto the strand itself.  If they break you haven't just presented your child with a million choking hazards and yourself with a gigantic mess.

And he just woke up from his nap...I'll try adding more photos later.

Baby in Motion

Pip was in a good mood one morning a while back so I took these. He is wearing the adorable sleep sack that Tom's mom knit (anybody else think it makes him look like  a really cute vulcan baby?). Unfortunately, in the haze of new parenthood, we accidentally put it in the dryer the first time we washed it so now it is the size of a care bear : (

What a difference a day makes

March 11
Phillip is 3 months old now and we're not quite sure where the time has gone. We have been exhausted and overwhelmed, our schedule has been in constant flux, we have been quite happy to eat dinner in our pjs and, when possible, go straight to bed afterwards (no matter if it is 7:30), our house is a mess, we've eaten more mac n cheese than we care to admit and steam in the bag frozen veggies have become a staple (potatoes and green beans are actually really tasty) but every day (at least a few times even on the hardest days) we look at our growing little boy and are bowled over by the little miracle that he is.  We still kind of can't believe that we are parents. He is growing so quickly and every couple of days he rolls out some new trick or makes a new discovery, which is really, really cool. In the last 6 weeks, as his vision has improved, he has become more and more interested in his surroundings and is realizing that he has ways of interacting with them.

There are some things that he has grown out of that we kind of miss, but they've been replaced by other things. For example, he no longer has his diaper sneezes - for at least the first month of his life starting when we were still in the hospital, literally every time we changed his diaper, he sneezed. At first we thought it was just airways drying out after birth, but then he just kept doing it. It was really, really cute. One day he just stopped.  He has also stopped saying "Bah!" every time Tom holds him up over his head. Now Tom says it for him.

April 5
In the last 6 weeks he really started to smile. When he started, it was usually during a diaper change or bath time (he really just hates clothes) but more and more he is starting to smile when he plays or when he interacts with other people. His big toothless grins are adorable and do a good job of melting away any frustrations we may be having at the moment. I went back to work a few weeks ago and those grins made it both easier and so much harder at the same time. That first morning I handed a grinning boy to Tom and practically had to run out the door because I worried I just wouldn't go if I didn't do it then. But later that afternoon, after picking him up we were sitting in his room in front of the mirror just trying it out - he'd never had much interest before - and he was looking at the colors and shapes and then he caught my eyes and his face lit up. He'd look away and then back and grin again. It made my day.

Apr 7 - bath time
A few weeks ago he managed to accidentally roll over onto his back. By the look on his face, he was clearly confused about what had just happened, but we were still pretty excited. He passed all of the 2-month physical developmental milestones with flying colors except for lifting his head up when on his stomach and weight (he was still under 10lbs). Our pediatrician had been remarking on his really good head control for weeks, but that one particular movement is still rough. We've been making a more concerted effort to do tummy time to get him working on his back muscles and he has been doing really well. Getting enough height on one side to roll over is good progress.

The things dangling from the arches above his play mat can entertain him for a little bit as he flails his arms about and sometimes makes contact. This development has made it so much easier to duck away to get something done.

Since I have returned to work on a part-time basis (I'll be full time again after my leave runs out), friends have been watching Phillip and they have made a few new discoveries. First is that he loves other kids. Our friend, Jenna, who has been watching him has 2 little girls - ages 2 and 6. One day when her 6 yr old was off from school she was able to calm down Pip by just talking to him. Another time when he was sad the 2 yr old brought him one of her dolls and put it down next to him and he was just mesmerized.
Apr 6 - baby burrito
The other big discovery is that he responds really well to swaddling (though our little escape artist is getting better and better at wriggling his way out of it). Our friend Torrey watched him one day a few weeks ago and she swaddled him during his naps and he did really well. We had tried swaddling when he was born and he didn't really take it. We'd been meaning to try again since our nephew, Thomas, was apparently the same way - refused to be swaddled at first, but later responded well to it. It seems that Phillip has reached that age. We've been swaddling him for naps and bedtime ever since. Of course now, a few weeks later, with his wriggling, we aren't quite sure what to do next. We think that this development has been driven by his other new-found interest - sucking on fingers. We frequently wake up to the sound of loud smacking coming from his pack n play.

Apr 9
Speaking of naps and bedtime, a few weeks ago we made some progress in that department. After one long day during which he was awake from around 10am until 9pm with only two 20 minute naps we were stuck that evening with an overly tired baby who was still resisting sleep. Tom and I were exhausted and passed him back and forth until finally I decided to go with what my mom and sister had been telling me - if he's fed, has a clean diaper and is burped just put him down - so I did. I put him down and crawled into bed. I warned Tom that he was going to scream and we braced ourselves. He cried off and on for about 15 minutes and then fell asleep and didn't wake up for another 3.5 hrs (!). It was amazing - I don't think we'd slept for that long in a stretch more than 3 or 4 times since he was born. While I was up feeding him after that nice, long stretch, I googled baby sleep habits and found that he is really only supposed to be awake for a couple of hours at a time during the day and that when babies get overly tired they end up having an even harder time getting to sleep. After another 3.5 hr sleep shift, we decided to try it and made sure that he was going down for naps every couple of hours. We had a very productive day and Phillip was very happy. He still has rough days, but he is so much more consistent than before.

A week or so after that experience Pip began sleeping for 5-6 hr stretches. In just the last 2-3 days he has gone back to the 3 hr interval - growth spurt?

Other things he has discovered:

  • Bubbles - drool bubbles are essential. This really picked up around 8 weeks.
  • Legs are fun to kick when excited - especially during diaper changes.
  • Those things down there might just be attached to him - he has started taking an interest in his feet.
  • Being outdoors is the best - he seems to love all of the sounds and the fresh air.
  • Vocal cords can do lots of things. We've had some interesting conversations with Pip, especially in the morning.
  • Giggling - only happened a handful of times, but it is the cutest thing ever.

New this week: lips can be used to make a whole other range of sounds : ), which means that his newborn cry is just about gone : (

Playing Catchup: Thanksgiving 2012

With our big gaps between posts, we have a fair amount to catch up on. As I can, I'm going to start filling in the gaps. Here goes:

Thanksgiving:

We tested the capacity of our house over Thanksgiving and I think we did pretty well. My parents and David came down from Brooklyn, Andrew and Mindy and their family came from Butler County, PA, and Tom's parents came up for dinner. We also got to meet Elizabeth, Andrew and Mindy's youngest for the first time! I think we fit pretty comfortably and didn't even have anybody sleeping in the shop.

We had a very nice dinner and had a great time hanging out with family. As with any holiday involving Butlers, we did work on some projects but we made sure to choose ones that did not involve paint, plaster dust and they were all things that could be dropped mid-way in case we decided that we'd had enough.

While Dad and Andrew and Mindy's family were down in Philly, David helped Tom and I load a borrowed truck with brush and haul a couple of loads over to Tom's work. We don't have pictures of it, but apparently David did get his turn on the telehandler - good times.

Mom cracked the whip on getting some our poor tortured plants into the ground. Most of them had been sitting next to the house without any care for months. The Carex wasn't even in soil - just bareroot  in pots. We got a nice little section of the yard under the huge norway maple planted with Carex morowii 'Ice Dance' (divisions from Temple) and a mix of Hellebores (leftovers from MBF). Later that afternoon once everybody else returned Mom also wrangled the little kids and had them raking leaves and gathering piles of sticks. One of the mornings when the kids were a bit stir crazy I managed to get the 2 older ones to help me wash windows. I think we may have gotten 5 done (just a small fraction of our many windows), but those ones are vastly improved.

Some of us also made the trip down to Longwood to see the Christmas lights. Thank you to Tom's mom for the comp tickets!

Cole trying to catch water droplets in the random spitting fountain in the children's garden.
Beech Allee with leaves still on the tree - really gorgeous.

Cole had a really good time and, on the walk back to the parking lot told us that it was late and time for bed. We wholeheartedly agreed.

Right before everybody went their separate ways on Saturday, we took one last load of brush over to Meadowbrook. Tom unloaded it (with quite the audience)...

Then the kids got rides in the telehandler...

and David drove the truck...

Andrew and Mindy and the kids went on their way and Mom, Dad and David returned to our house for  a while longer.  David, as usual, fell asleep on the couch and made friends with the cats.

not pictured: Bert - curled up near David's stomach.
It was a fun weekend. We're so glad that everybody came.

6 Weeks

We're not sure where the time has gone, but we now have a 6 week old baby boy. He is growing so quickly! In the past few days I've noticed that he isn't the same skinny baby he was before. His cheeks are filling out and his legs are getting chubby.  He has also really started to smile (of course, every time we bring the camera out he stops grinning). So much fun!

These weren't always 3/4 length sleeves.
Thanks, Maryanne, for the adorable onesie!
